EN: Diamond Head State Monument is a must-see tourist spot in Honolulu and in this state in general. I heard a lot about this crater in the past and I knew there was an option to hike to its top, which offers great views of Oahu island and the city of Honolulu. It really did not disappoint. I left my house at 5:20AM knowing that they open the access to the hike trail (you have to pay 1USD as a hiker to enter the path, 5USD for a car, I think) at 6AM. I read in several guides that the place gets tons of tourists and also the weather conditions can be quite punishing when doing the hike on the sun, since there is virtually no shade on the way up.
So I did it early in the morning. It was actually easier than I expected (or probably I am getting into the shape), there was one section of steps which was rather steep and that gave me a hard time, but that lasted only a minute or so. Everything else was okay. The views were great with the rising sun and the top of the lookout was not full of tourists. But that definitely changed later on, since I met virtually hundreds of people walking up the trail when I was descending, so I can imagine the queues on the top (there is actually a set of stairs, which can be jammed very easily, just under the top of the lookout). Therefore my decision to leave and hike early was good.
This was my last activity on Hawaii (at least for this time), my flight back to Tokyo departs in 8 hours, I enjoyed this place even though it is pretty hot all the time.
SK: Diamond Head patrí medzi najznámejšie turistické lokality na ostrove Oahu, veľa som o ňom počul a čítal. Ide o kráter vyhasnutej sopky, ktorý okrem svojho charakteristického tvaru ponúka aj skvelé výhľady na ostrov a aj mesto Honolulu. Vyhliadkové miesto naozaj nesklamalo, hoci jeho dosiahnutie si vyžaduje istú dávku námahy a plánovania. Ja osobne som vyrazil z domu o 5:20 ráno, pretože som vedel, že turistickú trasu otvárajú o šiestej. Za vstup do nej zaplatíte ako turisti 1 dolár, v prípade auta je to tuším päť dolárov.
Vopred som vedel, že toto miesto je v susedstve Honolulu a veľmi blízko Waikiki, teda miesta, kde sa nachádza drvivá väčšina hotelov v meste, výskyt turistov je teda viac ako pravdepodobný a všetky informácie na Internete opakovali, že je najlepšie vybrať sa na túru čo najskôr ráno. Tieto odporúčania som nasledoval a stálo to za to, na vrchole nebolo veľa turistov, dohromady nás tam bolo v jednom momente možno 10 a ani samotná trasa nebola prepchatá ľuďmi.
To sa ale zmenilo počas môjho zostupu späť do krátera, na ceste hore boli už stovky ľudí, niektorí pomalší a niektorí rýchlejší, vzhľadom na časté úzke úseky na trase sa už približne o siedmej ráno tvorili zápchy ľudí a rady čakajúce na postup hore. Jednoznačne teda odporúčam skorý výstup, ktorý vás okrem toho odmení aj východom slnka. Toto bola moja posledná aktivita na Havaji, o osem hodín letím späť do Japonska.
